Make Me Smile Monday - Memories of Sundays

The Chiefs pulled off another win yesterday, whipping the Seattle Seahawks 35-28! I'm STILL smiling about that!

I've been a Chiefs fan ever since they came to KC. Lenny Dawson is still one of my sports heroes.

The greatest thing to me is sharing time with my Dad watching the Chiefs. Like so many kids growing up in the 60's, my Dad and I didn't always see eye to eye on things. But we've always enjoyed watching the Chiefs together. It's one of the most pleasurable "father and son" activites that we've shared for 40 years now.

Dad's had some problems the last couple of years, and they've come to make me realize that time to spend with those you love is a very limited thing. That makes it even more precious. Sharing a Chiefs game on a beautiful Kansas City afternoon, like yesterday, is another jewel in the treasure chest of collected memories that I keep. It's ESPECIALLY nice when the Chiefs win! GO CHIEFS!

Here's a video I found, showing some of the tailgating action at Arrowhead:

Breakfast at Cascone's

I had breakfast at Cascone's in the River Market this weekend.

It was a dank, rainy Saturday morning. Even at 6:30 AM, the place was pretty busy. The waitress was friendly, and the coffee was really quite good. That's one thing that always scores points in my book. Why is it so many places that have really good breakfasts have coffee that tastes like dishwater? But not the case here.... it was hot, robust, and she kept the creamer coming!

I had 2 eggs over easy, country sausage, hash browns and toast. Everything was nicely done, especially the hash browns. They were not cooked to a total crisp, but not soggy in the middle either. The toast was FABULOUS! It's made from slices of Italian bread 3/4 of an inch thick at least, and really smothered with butter. It came out first, and there were more than the usual 2 slices on the plate. YUM! The sausage was good, but just a bit on the mild side for my taste. Next time there, I'll probably go back to the Italian sausage, which is one of my favorites.

All in all, it was a good breakfast on a cold, wet, and dreary October morning. Just what is needed to start such a day out with a little bit of cheer.

Fall Foliage Fest - Ward Parkway

I drove up Ward Parkway yesterday, from 95th Street to the Plaza. It is GORGEOUS with fall color! The trees are approaching their peak of color, with beautiful reds, oranges, and golden yellows highlighting the softer colors of browns and the remaining hues of green. A couple of the fountains are still going, and they serve as wonderful hilights to the colorful trees.

It was so spectacular that I turned around and drove the route again.

If you get the chance, go make this drive while it's so spectacular!

Golden Fall along I435

Most everyone who knows me knows that I love the fall foliage. The colors, the texture, even the smell of fall are some of my very favorite things. So I want to share that a little, as much as I can anyway.

Today is overcast, cool, threatening rain. As hard as it is to believe, it's often days like this when the color on the trees just pops out at you. It was like that as I drove down I435, south from 63rd Street to Bannister Road. The golden yellow of the trees along that stretch of hiway almost glowed! I had to remind myself to keep my eyes on the road. They were some of the most spectacular color I've seen so far.

I'll be reporting on other colorful areas I come across this fall.

If you know of some notable fall color, please share it with me, and the rest of the readers of this column. Fall in Kansas City can be gorgeous!

Fall has fallen

Wow! The weather has certainly taken a turn for the cooler, hasn't it? I personally have really mixed emotions about this time of year. I love the cool, crisp days, and even cooler nights. The autumn color is starting to reacy it's peak. Most ot the hectic work in the yards and gardens is over. But now we can feel that winter isn't too far away. Mixed feelings.

Then there's the scurry to bring in the last of the harvest. Another Blog is Possible writes:
You know you are a pesto fanatic when the first hard frost threatens and you end up stuffing several garbage bags full of basil plants. I was holding out today, hoping that the weather would stay warmer for a few more weeks, but we brought in the basil, cabbage, and tomatoes. Most of the pepper plants should be able to weather the cold spell.

A trip to Weston is always a great thing to do in the fall. If you get a chance, be sure to stop by the Weston Bend State Park and take the short hike to the scenic overlook. It's one of the most spectacular views of the river that I know of in our area. I've spent hours there, just gazing out at the horizon and feeling the turmoil of everyday life slip away from my head. The clear fall air makes it especially inspiring.

Daytripper reminisces a bit about summer's fading, sunflowers, and the niceties of fall. Very nice guitar music in the sunflower video.

Once you've enjoyed some of the beautiful fall in Kansas City, you'll want to preserve some of the memories. At The Blog of Me, a local scrapbooking celebrity shares ideas for this. Be sure to check out Angie's thoughts on "scrapbooking pie".

Ebayitis

Haphazardous, a local blog that posts some GREAT photography, mentioned today that "...Ebay is my new favorite vice." The post goes on to mention some new cameras scored on the worlds biggest rummage sale. (Congrats, by the way!).

I have to admit to having the same addiction to Ebay. As my brother once said, "Ebay is where you find those things that you never knew existed but you can't live without.". My own Ebayitis first showed up with a fountain pen addiction, and has grown to include books, computer parts, clothing, and my current flair up, vintage post cards.

While I do enjoy getting out and about in antique stores and flea markets, and perusing any stashes of old postcards and paperpenalia that I might find, I must admit that going online, browsing through a couple of hundred targeted listings of Kansas City postcards, and placing a bid or two is extremely enjoyable. As the weather changes, with winter looming on the horizon, I'm sure I'll spend more time at this endeavor. But what the hey! Most of my postcards now DO come to me through the mail, just as they were intended to!

OUCH

Well, Monday didn't start off with a smile.

I got tailended on the way into downtown on I70. Thank God, it was a minor collision and no one was hurt. We exchanged pertinent information and got off the road as quickly as possible. Let me tell you, standing in the middle of I70 at rush hour is NOT the most calming way to start your day. I have a new found admiration for those people who have to put themselves into such situations for a living.

Now comes the trudging to the police station to file reports, the repair estimates, etc., etc. Joy, joy!

As I say, thank God, no one was injured, only 2 of us were actually involved. A few others got their adrenalin jolt, for sure, but managed not to hit or be hit. I think I'd rather stick to my coffee for my morning wakeup!

Make Me Smile Monday.....

Here's a great joke, courtesy of Ramblings of a Mad Cow:

A West Texas cowboy was herding his cows in a remote pasture when suddenly a brand-new BMW advanced out of a dust cloud towards him. The driver, a young man in a Brioni suit, Gucci shoes, Ray Ban sunglasses and YSL tie, leans out the window and asks the cowboy, “If I tell you exactly how many cows and calves you have in your herd, will you give me a calf?”

The cowboy looks at the man, obviously a yuppie, then looks at his peacefully grazing herd and calmly answers, “Sure, Why not?”

The yuppie parks his car, whips out his Dell notebook computer, connects it to his Cingular RAZR V3 cell phone, and surfs to a NASA page on the Internet, where he calls up a GPS satellite navigation system to get an exact fix on his location which he then feeds to another NASA satellite that scans the area in an ultra-high-resolution photo.

The young man then opens the digital photo in Adobe Photoshop and exports it to an image processing facility in Hamburg, Germany. Within seconds, he receives an email on his Palm Pilot that the image has been processed and the data stored.

He then accesses a MS-SQL database through an ODBC connected Excel spreadsheet with email on his Blackberry and, after a few minutes, receives a response. Finally, he prints out a full-color, 150-page report on his hi-tech, miniaturized HP LaserJet printer and finally turns to the cowboy and says, “You have exactly 1,586 cows and calves.”

“That’s right. Well, I guess you can take one of my calves,” says the cowboy.

He watches the young man select one of the animals and looks on amused as the young man stuffs it into the trunk of his car.

Then the cowboy says to the young man, “Hey, if I can tell you exactly what your business is, will you give me back my calf?”

The young man thinks about it for a second and then says, “Okay, why not?”

“You’re a Congressman for the U.S. Government”, says the cowboy.

“Wow! That’s correct,” says the yuppie, “but how did you guess that?”

“No guessing required.” answered the cowboy. “You showed up here even though nobody called you; you want to get paid for an answer I already knew, to a question I never asked. You tried to show me how much smarter than me you are; and you don’t know a thing about cows…….. "

"Now give me back my dog.”
