Latte Land Moving to the Northland

Here's more evidence that things are perking up in "the Plaza - NORTH". Latte Land, a Plaza icon, is planning 2 new stores in the Northland - one in Zona Rosa, the other in Briarcliff Village, at the intersection of 169 and I-29 hiways. The two original Latte Land Espresso shops, owned by Jeff Schmidt, have been in head to head competition with Starbucks on the Plaza. After turning down overtures from Starbucks to buy his businesses, Schmidt has decided instead to expand into the growing Northland area.

The new Latte Land in Zona Rosa is scheduled to open today, July 31st. I don't know about you, but I'm eagerly anticipating more COFFEE in the Northland!

Louis Curtis Studio 1118 McGee

Louis Curtis was one of Kansas City's leading architects. This, the site of his downtown studio, is still a jewel of art deco design.

Did you know....

How about a little Kansas City trivia?

Kansas City has more miles of freeway per capita than any other city are with more than 1 million residents. We also have more miles of boulevards than Paris, France, a city known for it's boulevards.

Kansas City has more fountains than any other city in the world, with the exception of Rome, Italy.

Kansas City is home to the worlds largest badminton shuttle, found on the grounds of the Nelson-Atkins Art Museum. The shuttles there are 18 feet tall and weigh about 5,000 lbs, almost 50 times the size of the real thing!

And you thought there was nothing in Kansas City!

Where's the Beef?

Good morning, Kansas City! It's a beautiful, sunny morning, still cool compared to the heat we've had and the heat to come, so let's enjoy it!

This post is a request. Does anyone know where to find grass-fed beef in Kansas City? I've been reading a lot about it.... the health benefits, the supposedly better taste, and other things. I'd like to give it a try, but don't know where to find a good source. If anyone knows, please leave a comment. Thanks!

Have a great day!

Kansas City - Thru the Eye

I love Kansas City's huge variety of architecture!

From century old buildings, to the high-tech modern ones, we've got tremendous architectural gems here in our town. This is a view I'm quite familiar with, as I've worked downtown for over 30 years. I hope you enjoy it, too!

Don't pay your tax.... LEGALLY!

Stop Paying Taxes in Kansas City!

Well, for one weekend at least, August 4-6, 2006, you can stop paying sales taxes on qualifying items when purchased in Kansas City, Missouri.

The Missouri Department of revenue states:

The sales tax exemption is limited to:
* Clothing - any article having a taxable value of $100 or less
* School supplies - not to exceed $50 per purchase
* Computer software - taxable value of $350 or less
* Personal computers - not to exceed $3,500
* Computer peripheral devices - not to exceed $3,500

You can check out the
Department of Revenue's website for more details of what is covered by the tax free status.

Not all cities, nor counties for that matter, participate in this event. If you're wanting to shop somewhere other than Kansas City, Missouri, you should check out these links:
Cities opting out

Conties opting out

Depending on your planned purchases, you could save enough for a cup of coffee, or maybe enough for something more substantial. This would be a good time to make some of those major clothing, computer, and software purchases you've been thinking about.

What could be better than NOT paying taxes? Don't miss this one!

Walt Bodine says....

God knows there are ample conduits for information today. More TV networks then ever, a growing list of cable features, satellite services, daily newspapers, rounded out by a lively suburban press and even relatively new papers and magazines within the city itself, like The Pitch and Ingram’s City Homes. In addition, every major magazine stand abounds with hundreds of titles, and in Kansas City 36 radio signals add to the mix.

Never have so many worked so hard in so many ways, to reach an audience that, in the main, doesn’t give a damn.

Strawberry Pie

Here it is, the 3rd day of July, and I'm eagerly looking forward to my first taste of Perkin's Strawberry pie this year.

I used to make it a point to pick up a whole strawberry pie for the 4th of July get together each year. But the times have changed, the familial affiliations have re-arranged. I've not attended those yearly celebrations of independence for a couple of years, and I'd kind of forgotten about the strawberry pie.

But yesterday, while just out doing a reminiscing tour of the northland, I stopped into the Perkins on North Oak Trafficway. I was instantly smitten by the sight of the strawberry pies in the pastry case. Although I was far too full, after an excellent dinner of meatloaf and mashed potatoes, to enjoy a piece of pie right then, I brought one home with me. I'm luxuriating in the knowledge that it's waiting for me, even as I type.

Strawberry pie from Perkin's. NOW it's summer!
